Blessing bags are small bags of toiletries, snacks, health and personal care items that you can keep in your car and hand out to any homeless or needy person you might happen to meet on the road. If you are nervous about what to say when presenting a bag; "Excuse me, do you think you could use this?" is a good option.
If you can get a group of friends together and assign each person an object to bring (example; 24 pack of soap) you can assemble many bags in less than 20 minutes and everyone can go away with a couple of bags to keep in their cars.

You can sew your own bags, buy them, or use gallon zip lock bags (which I prefer because they're clear).

Example Items to Include:

-Small KJV bible
-Soap and wash-rag
-Travel sized shampoo
-Toothbrush and toothpaste
-Deodorant
-Disposable Razor
-Travel sized lotion
-Chapstick
-Sanitary items for females
-Hand sanitizer
-Sample packs of Ibuprofen
-Band-aids
-Cough drops
-Small reusable water bottle
-Pair of new socks
-Pair of gloves
-Individually wrapped snacks, protein bars, powdered drink mixes

Be creative! Include hand written notes of encouragement and love if you choose. Make separate goody bags for children and dogs if the Spirit leads you! Nod

If there be among you a poor man of one of thy brethren within any of thy gates in thy land which the Lord thy God giveth thee, thou shalt not harden thine heart, nor shut thine hand from thy poor brother:

But thou shalt open thine hand wide unto him, and shalt surely lend him sufficient for his need, in that which he wanteth. Deuteronomy 15:7-8

Did my research about giving to the homeless. I came across some pretty interesting concerns. One being that by giving food/money/etc you are encouraging their motives to keep begging and receive free food and money that way as a lifestyle. While that is true for some homeless, every homeless person is a different story.

Also, another concern that I read is that those homeless begging at the stop signs, by the roads, etc, are being watched by others and when they see something of value given to the begging person, they force him/her to give it up to them.

So what I've decided to do is to try and make a list/directory of all the available local shelters, food banks, hotlines, transitional housing programs, libraries (for computer w/free wifi), food/care for homeless pets, etc. Put it all on paper with basic info like addresses, phone numbers, URLs, etc. Put it in an envelope and hand them out whenever you're driving by and see a homeless. You can add a little cash, maybe some bus passes, or a miniature version of the blessing bags, something like that.

I'm sure that'll help inform where the resources are and how they can get to them. So if the homeless person really wants to get out of his/her situation, he/she will look up the resources list that you provided.

What do you think?

That's a great idea mouse, I think it would be a good thing to add to a small blessing bag! Smile
I know it does encourage some people to continue living off the mercy of others, and many of them are homeless because of addiction and things like that. I've even been scammed before (watched them buy booze 5 minutes later). However, if it's a small comfort that I can provide without spending too much, then I look at it as a gesture that the Lord would approve of, especially if they decide to make use of the bible or tracts included.
Unfortunately, from what I've heard and read, the shelters here in Michigan are crowded past capacity most nights, and most are infected with fleas/lice, and you're very likely to get your belongings stolen. But you're right, if they want help, there are programs out there, and they can do something about their situation. I simply do not want to let myself give in to the mentality that we shouldn't give for fear of being taken advantage of. Even if they pack up at the end of the day and drive off in a Ferrari, the Lord knows that you cared.

Amen to that. Yeah I guess I should be less worried and just give whatever.
